Ahlstrom’s specimen collection cards portfolio is designed for microvolume sampling, transport and stabilization of biospecimens at ambient temperature.

Minimal volumes for analysis, less equipment required, and only basic skills needed are all features that make our cards ideal to be used in any kind of environment and circumstances.

Watch our video to learn more about the DBS technology

The DBS technology is the future of convenient home blood testing: a microvolume of blood sample is collected directly onto a specimen collection card, transported to the laboratory and preserved at ambient temperature prior to analysis.

In recent years, the use of DBS has gained increasing interest compared to the conventional collection and analysis of liquid samples and has been extensively utilized in healthcare especially in challenging environments.

This technology leads to a simplification of the blood collection process and a significant reduction of the cost involved.

BioSample 2.0 card: Advancements in RNA preservation and HIV drug resistance genotyping

Dried Blood Spot (DBS) technology is increasingly used for HIV-1 drug resistance genotyping and viral load monitoring, particularly in resource-limited settings. However, a key challenge is ensuring the stability of viral RNA in DBS samples during collection, transportation, and storage.

This webinar examines the impact of whole blood sample storage on Ahlstrom BioSample 2.0 specimen collection cards at room temperature, focusing on the duration and its effect on HIV-1 RNA integrity.

Dried blood spot technology for Health and Wellness

Biological samples collected and stored are an essential data resource with significant research potential for finding markers used in the early detection of diseases that are still curable. The use of Dried Blood Spot (DBS) offers a novel approach to biosamples storage and collection and provides enormous advantages over liquid blood or plasma in both preclinical and clinical studies.

HemaSep™ plasma separation card for free amino acid analysis

The study conducted by the independent laboratory Masdiag presents the use of Ahlstrom's plasma separation cards (HemaSep-L) for free amino acid (AA) analysis. The study compares AAs concentrations in the fraction containing red blood cells (RBC) and in plasma obtained using a HemaSep-L separation card with results obtained for plasma fraction obtained by centrifugation. Obtained results were also compared with concentrations established in the dried blood spot (DBS) samples obtained by the classical approach. The comparison was conducted using venous blood.

Wet blood spot: unlocking new horizons for blood testing

Wet blood spot technology is a method used to collect and analyze small samples of blood on filter paper. Unlike dried blood spot (DBS) technology, where blood is allowed to dry on the filter paper, wet blood spot technology maintains the blood sample in a wet or liquid state until analysis, allowing to preserve and recover fresh blood cells of high quality.

IAhlstrom BioSample 2.0 card: Advancements in RNA preservation and HIV drug resistance genotyping

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) remains a major global public health issue. Antiretroviral (ARV) drug resistance poses a significant threat to controlling the pandemic, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where access to HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) detection assays is limited. Point-of-care (POC) tests offer a solution, but their complexity remains a challenge. In this study, we evaluate the effect of whole blood sample storage on BioSample 2.0 at room temperature and duration on HIV-1 sample RNA integrity.

Lipid Saver™ cards: optimized stability of retinol, α-tocopherol and CoQ10 for a non-invasive, self-collected method for monitoring antioxidant micronutrients

Antioxidants like retinol (Vitamin A), α-tocopherol (Vitamin E), and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) play a crucial role in preventing and treating diseases linked to oxidative stress. The Ahlstrom Lipid Saver™ card creates a microenvironment that minimizes oxidative degradation, ensuring the long-term stability of lipophilic antioxidants, especially during transport. Compared to standard DBS cards, Lipid Saver™ cards significantly improve the stability and reliability of lipophilic antioxidant measurements, including tocopherol and coenzyme Q10.

Plasma separation card (HemaSep L) in quantitative LC MS/MS amino acids analysis

Amino acids (AAs) are essential building blocks of every known life, including humans. They play an important role in organism homeostasis, so their circulated-free concentration should be carefully monitored. In human blood, amino acids are distributed between plasma and erythrocytes (RBC) based on their role and intrinsic properties. The study conducted by the independent laboratory Masdiag presents the use of Ahlstrom's plasma separation cards (HemaSep-L) for free amino acid (AA) analysis.
